GARHAPA is a novel which tells the story of a young woman, G. R. (Grahabita), begins to write in her journal that she begins to experience—the author has purposely misspelled it as “naskah drama bahasa sunda” in order not to reveal the identity of the protagonist. G. R. and her two close friends, Mai and Indriani, each go on separate journeys in their realities: there is an external struggle for freedom and equality during Indonesia’s New Order era; while they exist within this time, they fail to find themselves in their own bodies and minds due to the objectification of women living under such patriarchal society ruled by male domination. G. R. and her friends eventually begin to tell their own stories in the form of biographies; they come to know that they are not alone in their struggles, and together they seek to unleash their power and make a difference in Indonesian society. The book is about the lives of three women who, despite their different backgrounds and personalities, separate from each other in the pursuit of self-discovery and empowerment. These young women become strong and brave through their struggles and through entertaining and enlightening stories that enhance and shape the collective consciousness of women under New Order. The book was released on 22 January 2015 by Dewi Pustaka Publications Center (Pustaka Karya). In 1835, Indonesian novelist V. C. Prawoto claims that Garhapa is a legend from Komering Regency, a story that was later denied by the Nusa Sunda Province’s culture and tourism office. The Japanese occupation government also denied it as a mythical story after the Japanese surrendered Indonesia to the Dutch in 1945. Portrayed in popular folklore, myths of Garhapa are still told in some parts of Indonesia today. Some say Garhapa gave birth to "an ancient mighty creature buried deep in the earth." A traditional literary form, Hikayat is written about historical exploits of heroes of old. This book has been adapted into two movies. The first one is based on the novel and released in 2016 under the name "Garhapa: A Tale of three women".
